Quick Guide to Puppy Care and Kitten Care

Whether you’ve been planning to get a new puppy or kitten for months or you’re bringing one home on a whim, chances are you’re really excited. Before you get too far ahead of yourself, though, there are a few things you need to know and do. This guide from our team at Carolina Crossing Veterinary Clinic in Benson can help.

Puppy & Kitten Care

Buy Your Supplies

It’s never a good idea to bring home a pet without some basic supplies. A few treats as well as food and water bowls are some of the most important. You want to be able to keep your pet fed and hydrated from the beginning. If you’re getting a kitten, you will want to get a litter box and litter.

Other supplies typically depend on your preferences for things. For instance, if you don’t want your new pet sleeping on your sofa or your bed, you’ll need to go ahead and have them a comfortable one of their own. You might also want to pick up some toys, a collar, and a leash.

Pet-Proof Your Home

Pets can get into as much – or more – trouble around your house as babies who are just learning to crawl. That is why it is important to pet-proof your house. Put locks on cabinets so that they can’t sneak in. Crawl around to locate anything dangerous that they could swallow or any wires that they can chew on.

Visit Your Veterinarian As Soon As Possible

If you can, it’s best to take your new puppy or kitten to a veterinarian before you even bring them home. If that’s not an option, schedule an appointment as soon as you can after adopting your new pet. Your first appointment is an important one. The veterinarian will check their vitals and overall health. We will provide any vaccinations as needed to keep your pet healthy from sickness and disease.

You will discuss various care topics, including bathing, feeding, house training, and the need to spay or neuter. It will, of course, be some time before you need to set a spay or neuter appointment. However, discussing this early helps you prepare.
